The Cuttlebone
The Cuttlebone, or the cuttlefish bone, is a porous inner shell made of aragonite, a carbonate mineral. This allows the cuttlefish to change the gas-to-liquid ratio within the cuttlebone to regulate buoyancy. Varying among the the species of cuttlefish, cuttlebones implode at 660- 2,000 feet deep. Every species of cuttlefish has a distinct size, pattern of texture, and shape of the cuttlebone, making each cuttlebone from different species unique. The cuttle bone is unique to the cuttlefish only.
